- Sugar per can, not per 100 ml: a small number scales up quickly across a full serving. Vodka waters should land near the bottom of the shelf here.
- The ingredient list length: vodka, water, flavour and carbonation is a short list. Long lists usually mean syrups, sweeteners and colours.
- ABV and can size together: 5% in a 355 ml can is a very different drink from 7% in a 473 ml can. This is what actually determines standard drinks.
- Base spirit versus malt or sugar base: some "vodka-style" coolers are not made with vodka at all. If it does not say vodka, it probably is not.
- The water itself: most brands never mention it, which tells you how much thought went into the largest ingredient in the can.
Want a two-minute test at home? Chill two cans to the same temperature, pour small amounts, sip, and wait ten seconds before judging. Smoothness shows up in the finish, not the first hit — and warm samples will always taste harsher.
Why "gentler on the body" needs context
