You want to enjoy your own party, not spend it behind the counter making one drink at a time. The answer is batch cocktails: drinks you prepare or stock in bulk before guests arrive, so serving each one takes seconds. Here's how to scale light, refreshing vodka-water drinks for a dinner party or a wedding in Canada, with numbers you can plan around today.
Why batch cocktails beat a made-to-order bar
Made-to-order drinks create a bottleneck. One person with one shaker ends up facing a line of thirsty guests. Batching moves all the measuring to the day before, so every drink tastes the same at 6 p.m. and at 11 p.m. It also makes your budget predictable, because you know exactly how much you're buying.
Vodka-water drinks are especially easy to scale. They have no eggs, no cream and no bubbles to manage, so a pitcher or dispenser stays consistent all evening. That's also why Aura is a still drink: with zero carbonation, nothing goes flat, and no bubbles means no bloating.
How much to buy for party cocktails
A common rule of thumb is about one drink per guest per hour, with a little extra in the first hour. Plan lower if many guests won't be drinking, and count non-drinkers too so you have plenty of alcohol-free options.
- Dinner party, 10 guests, 4 hours: roughly 40 drinks in total. One 24-can case covers cocktail hour and after-dinner drinks if you're also pouring wine with the meal.
- Backyard party, 30 guests, 5 hours: plan on about 150 drinks across all beverages. Three or four cases of a signature drink, plus beer, wine and alcohol-free choices, keeps things balanced.
- Wedding cocktail hour, 100 guests: if your signature drink covers about half of what's poured that hour, budget 50 to 75 servings, or two to three cases, for that hour alone.
Two ways to batch vodka-water drinks
Option 1: The ready-to-pour bar
The simplest batch is one that's already made. Chill cases of our vodka water cocktails in the fridge for a full day before the event. Set out all three flavours (Cucumber Lime, Coconut Pineapple and Mango Peach) in tubs of ice with a small sign, and guests can serve themselves. For a more polished look, pour chilled cans into a glass drink dispenser just before service and garnish the station with cucumber ribbons and lime wheels, pineapple wedges or sliced peach. Put the ice in the glasses, not the dispenser, so the batch doesn't water down.
Option 2: A from-scratch pitcher
If you'd rather mix your own, keep the ratio simple: 1 part vodka to 3 parts cold still water, plus fresh citrus or muddled fruit to taste. For a 2 L dispenser, that's about 500 mL of vodka and 1.5 L of water. Taste it before guests arrive, chill everything well and serve over ice. Hand-mixed batches can vary in strength from glass to glass, which is one reason pre-portioned 355 mL cans are easier to manage at large events.
Wedding cocktails: extra planning
- Licensing: in Canada, serving alcohol at events is regulated by each province. Before you buy, confirm whether your venue or caterer is licensed, or whether you need a special event permit from your province.
- Staffing: even a self-serve station needs someone to check ages and keep an eye on pacing.
- A signature drink: naming one flavour after the couple gives guests an easy first choice and makes your quantities simpler to forecast.
- Keeping it cold: fill tubs with ice and a little cold water so cans chill faster, and restock from coolers kept out of the sun.
