You bought a case for the long weekend, and by the third can you felt it: tight waistband, a heavy gassy pressure, a sticky sweetness you kept trying to rinse away. Here is how to pick a better can today, starting with the one in your fridge.
Why the heaviness happens
A carbonated drink delivers dissolved CO2 straight into your stomach, and that gas has to go somewhere. It is the same reason a fast soda makes you feel full before you have finished it. Add sugar, juice concentrate or a sugar alcohol on top and the drink starts working against the evening. Two changes solve most of it: lose the carbonation, and lose the sweetener. That is the whole idea behind a still vodka water — the same simple drink, no bubbles, no bloating.
Canadian craft cocktails: four checks before you buy the case
Do this in the aisle, in under a minute, before you commit to 24 cans.
- Still or carbonated? Look for "sparkling," "seltzer," "soda" or a carbonation statement on the back panel. If a can does not explicitly say it is still, assume it fizzes.
- What is the sweetener? Scan the ingredients for cane sugar, juice concentrate, stevia, sucralose or erythritol. "No added sugar, no artificial sweeteners" should be printed on the can, not left to the marketing.
- What is the alcohol, really? Plenty of coolers are built on a neutral malt or fermented sugar base rather than a distilled spirit. If you want vodka, the label should say premium vodka.
- What is the water? Water is the majority of the liquid, so it is the loudest ingredient in the can. Most brands never mention it. That silence tells you something.
How alkaline water and premium vodka change the glass
