Canned Cocktail Shelf Life: How Long Do They Really Last?

Canned Cocktail Shelf Life: How Long Do They Really Last?

If a case of canned cocktails has been sitting in your garage since the long weekend, you probably want one answer: is it still good? Here is the short version of canned cocktail shelf life. A sealed, spirit-based canned cocktail is shelf-stable and stays safe to drink well past a year when stored properly. The real issue is flavour, not safety, because taste and aroma fade slowly over time. Below we cover how long do canned cocktails last, what the best-before date really means, whether they need the fridge, what to do with a can that froze in the car, and how to store a case so the last can tastes like the first.

Canned Cocktail Shelf Life: The Quick Answer

  • Unopened, stored cool and dark: most spirit-based canned cocktails are at their best for 12 to 18 months from the production date and remain safe well beyond that.
  • Unopened, stored warm or in sunlight: expect flavour to dull within a few months, even though the drink is still safe.
  • Opened: finish it the same day.

Alcohol, a sealed can and the absence of perishable ingredients like dairy or fresh juice are why these drinks last. Our vodka water cocktails are premium vodka, alkaline water and natural flavour with no added sugar and no preservatives, so the can is doing the preserving, not additives.

How to Read the Best-Before Date

In Canada, a best-before date is a quality indicator, not a safety deadline. It is usually printed on the bottom of the can or on the case tray, sometimes as a lot code beside the packaging date. Past that date, an intact can will not make you sick, but the fruit notes in a Mango Peach or Coconut Pineapple will be less vivid than they were fresh. If you are more than six months past it, taste one can before serving a crowd.

Do Canned Cocktails Need Refrigeration?

No. Unopened canned cocktails do not need refrigeration for safety. Room temperature is fine for storage, and the fridge is only for chilling before you serve. That said, "room temperature" means a cool room. The enemies of a canned cocktail are heat, light and temperature swings, so a cupboard away from the stove beats the top of the fridge, and a basement beats a garage that hits 35°C in July.

A simple routine for storing canned cocktails: keep the sealed case somewhere cool and dark, and move a few cans to the fridge the day before you need them. Aura is a still drink with zero carbonation, so there is no fizz to protect and nothing lost if a can gets jostled in a cooler.

What Happens If a Can Freezes in the Car

This is the classic Canadian problem: a case left in the trunk overnight in January in Edmonton or Ottawa. A low-alcohol canned cocktail is mostly water, so it freezes only a few degrees below 0°C. Water expands as it freezes, which can bulge the can, split a seam or lift the lid.

  • Bulging, leaking or split can: discard it. Once the seal is compromised the drink is no longer protected.
  • Intact but frozen solid: bring it inside and thaw it slowly in the fridge, not on a heater. Do not open it while frozen.
  • After thawing: the drink is safe if the can held, but flavour may be slightly muted. Give it a gentle swirl and drink those cans first.

Heat is the opposite risk. A closed car in a Toronto August can pass 50°C inside, which ages flavour fast. Bring the case indoors the same day.

How to Store a Case Properly

  • Temperature: aim for a steady 4°C to 20°C. A basement, cold room or interior closet is ideal.
  • Light: leave cans in the closed case. Cardboard blocks the UV that degrades natural flavours.
  • Position: store cans upright so the liquid is not resting against the seam.
  • Rotation: write the purchase date on the case and drink older cases first.
  • Garage rule: spring and fall only. Canadian garages freeze in winter and bake in summer.

Follow those five steps and a case of 24 will taste right from the first can to the last. To learn what goes into every can and why we skip carbonation, sugar and preservatives, read why Aura.
