Hosting Non Drinkers: Build a Bar Where Everyone Fits In

Hosting Non Drinkers: Build a Bar Where Everyone Fits In

If you're hosting non drinkers alongside friends who do drink, the real challenge isn't the menu. It's the moment someone has to explain why they're holding a glass of tap water. Designated drivers, people pacing themselves and guests who simply don't drink much all want the same thing you do: a good night where nobody comments on what's in their hand. The fix is a bar where every option looks equally intentional. Here's how to set one up today.

Hosting non drinkers starts with one rule: no "special" table

The fastest way to make someone feel singled out is to put the alcohol-free drinks in a separate cooler, or to ask "Do you want the non-alcoholic one?" in front of the room. Put everything on one bar, use the same glassware and garnishes for every drink, and nobody has to justify their choice.

Stock three tiers, not two

  • Zero-proof: at least two options that feel like a real drink, such as a quality non-alcoholic beer, a ginger-and-citrus mocktail or iced tea with fresh mint. Plain pop alone tells guests you didn't plan for them.
  • Low alcohol options: lower-ABV beer, or a wine spritz topped up generously with soda water.
  • Regular drinks: served in measured, predictable portions.

Designated drivers belong firmly in the first tier, so make those choices easy to find without asking.

Make pacing easy at a light drinking party

Most people pacing themselves aren't avoiding alcohol entirely; they're trying to keep count. Free-poured cocktails and constantly topped-up wine glasses make that nearly impossible. A few practical changes help:

  • Serve single-serve portions. A can or a measured pour is easy to track. Canada's Guidance on Alcohol and Health defines a standard drink as roughly 341 mL of 5% beer, 142 mL of 12% wine or 43 mL of 40% spirits.
  • Put water everywhere. A pitcher of still water with cucumber or citrus on the bar, plus a second station elsewhere, makes alternating drinks the default.
  • Stop refilling without asking. Let guests pour their own, or check in quietly.
  • Feed people early. Real food at the start of the night, not just chips at 11 p.m.

Where a still vodka water fits

For guests who want a drink but prefer something lighter in feel, a canned, still vodka water is an easy addition. Aura pairs premium distilled vodka with alkaline water (pH 8.5+) and natural flavour, with no added sugar, no artificial sweeteners and no preservatives, and it's gluten-free. Unlike seltzers and vodka sodas, it has zero carbonation: no bubbles means no bloating, which many guests appreciate over a long evening of food and conversation.

The 355 mL can also supports mindful drinking, because a sealed, single-serve portion is easier to keep track of than a cocktail someone else mixed. Set out Cucumber Lime, Coconut Pineapple and Mango Peach in an ice bucket next to your zero-proof options and the bar reads as one generous spread. Browse our vodka water cocktails or read why Aura to learn how it's made.

One important note: Aura contains alcohol. It's a lighter-feeling choice, not an alcohol-free one, so label it clearly and never offer it to a designated driver as a substitute.

What to say (and what not to)

Language matters as much as the menu. Try "What can I get you? There's beer, wine, a couple of mocktails and canned cocktails in the bucket." That's a full list with no hierarchy. Skip "Just one?", "You're not drinking?" and announcing who's driving. If someone switches to water halfway through, say nothing at all. That's mindful drinking working the way it should.

A quick checklist for tonight

  • Two zero-proof drinks that feel deliberate
  • At least one lower-ABV or single-serve choice
  • Water stations and real food
  • Matching glassware for every drink
  • Taxi, rideshare or transit info handy for anyone who needs it
