You are standing in front of a cooler wall with forty near-identical cans on it. Every one says "crafted," "clean" and "real fruit." Half of them cost twice what the other half cost. The honest problem is that premium ready to drink cocktails and mass-market hard seltzers look identical from three feet away — and the label is designed to keep it that way. Here is how to tell them apart in about twenty seconds, using only what is printed on the can.
What actually makes premium ready to drink cocktails premium
Price and packaging are not evidence. There are six things that genuinely separate a premium RTD from a commodity one, and every single one of them is checkable before you pay.
1. The base spirit is named
This is the fastest filter there is. A premium RTD tells you what is in it: vodka, gin, tequila, rum. A commodity seltzer usually cannot, because the alcohol comes from a neutral sugar-base or malt fermentation — cheap to produce, and the reason so many of them carry a faint cidery aftertaste. If the can says "alcohol" or "malt" instead of naming a distilled spirit, you are not holding a cocktail. You are holding a flavoured alcohol beverage.
2. The water is treated as an ingredient
Most RTDs are 90% water by volume, and almost nobody talks about it. That is a tell. Water carries every flavour in the can, so a brand that ignores it is telling you where its priorities are. Aura is built on alkaline water at pH 8.5+ — you can read the reasoning behind that on why Aura.
3. Sweetener load
Scan the ingredients for cane sugar, glucose-fructose, sucralose, aspartame, acesulfame potassium or stevia. "Zero sugar" and "no added sugar" are not the same claim — the first is often achieved with an artificial sweetener, the second means nothing was added at all. Aura has no added sugar and no artificial sweeteners, which is why the fruit reads as fruit rather than candy.
4. Carbonation — and whether you actually want it
Almost the entire ready to drink category is carbonated, and carbonation is doing quiet work: bubbles mask off-notes from a cheap base and stretch thin flavour. 5. Honest ABV and can size

6. What is missing
Preservatives, colours, "natural flavour" with no other ingredient behind it. Also check for gluten-free status if it matters to you — spirit-based RTDs generally clear that bar, malt-based ones do not.

- Is a real distilled spirit named on the can?
- Does the brand say anything at all about its water?
- Added sugar or artificial sweeteners in the ingredient list?
- Carbonated or still — and which one do you actually want tonight?
- ABV and volume together, converted to standard drinks.
- Fewer than six ingredients you can pronounce.
