You had three drinks on Saturday. Your friend had four. You woke up feeling like you'd been hit by a bus; they woke up fine. Before blaming your tolerance, look at what was actually in the can — because sugar in canned cocktails has become one of the loudest arguments in Canadian drinks retail, and a lot of what circulates about it online runs well ahead of the evidence. Here is what the peer-reviewed research supports, what it doesn't, and how to read a Canadian can in about fifteen seconds.
The short answer, before the caveats
Ethanol is the main driver of how you feel the next morning, and no amount of label-reading changes that. What the research does support is narrower: the non-alcohol contents of a drink — sugars, sweeteners, and the flavour compounds that ride along with darker spirits — measurably change subjective next-day symptoms and how quickly alcohol reaches your blood, even when the alcohol dose is held constant. That's a comfort question, not a health question.
What the research says about sugar in canned cocktails
Adding sugar doesn't fix a hangover
The best controlled evidence here is a systematic review published in the BMJ by Pittler, Verster and Ernst (2005), which screened randomised controlled trials of hangover interventions and included eight. Exactly one tested sugars: a 1976 trial that randomised 109 people to fructose or glucose, either during drinking (1 g/kg body weight) or after it (0.5 g/kg). The result was a null — "no intergroup difference (P>0.05)." The reviewers scored that trial 2 out of 5 on the Jadad quality scale, and concluded that across all eight trials "most were of small sample size, and all used unvalidated symptom scores."
So the popular claim that sugar is the hidden villain behind bad hangovers has little direct experimental support — nobody has run the trial that would settle it.
Sweeteners change absorption — but not in the direction you'd expect
The cleanest experimental result on sweeteners points the opposite way from most marketing. Marczinski and Stamates (2013) had 16 social drinkers complete three sessions each: vodka with a regular soft drink, vodka with the diet version, and a placebo. Peak breath alcohol concentration was significantly higher on the diet mixer — 0.091 versus 0.077 g/210 L — with more impairment on a reaction-time task and, critically, no subjective awareness of the difference. The proposed mechanism is gastric emptying: sugar in the stomach slows it, so alcohol reaches the small intestine more gradually.
Read that carefully: it cuts against a lazy reading of "low sugar alcoholic drinks are always better," because the sugar-sweetened version produced the lower peak. The study compared two carbonated sodas and says nothing about an unsweetened still drink. Aura contains neither sugar nor artificial sweeteners, and no study has tested it.
What comes along with the alcohol does move the dial
Rohsenow and colleagues (2010) brought 95 heavy drinkers aged 21 to 33 up to a mean breath alcohol concentration of 0.11 g% on either bourbon (high-congener) or vodka (low-congener), with overnight polysomnography and morning neurocognitive testing. People reported worse hangovers after bourbon — but the authors found that "congener content affects only how people feel the next day," with no matching difference in next-day cognitive impairment. Both drinks reduced sleep efficiency and REM sleep.
That's the most defensible summary here: what's in the drink besides ethanol shifts how you feel. It doesn't make the alcohol safer, and it didn't protect anyone's reaction time.
Why a sweetened RTD lands differently than an unsweetened one
Three things separate a sweetened can from an unsweetened one, and only one is speculative.
- Calories you didn't count. Alcohol already carries roughly 7 calories per gram. Added sugar stacks on top, and unlike a dessert, nobody mentally logs it.
- Composition, not just quantity. A 2021 review in ACS Chemical Neuroscience notes that flavoured alcoholic beverages carry glucose and fructose in ratios ranging from roughly 42% to 70% fructose, and that fructose crosses into the brain far more slowly than glucose because the GLUT-5 transporter "is expressed much less than GLUT-1." The authors argue the sugar profile itself may influence consumption, though that rests largely on rodent data.
- Volume drift. Sweet drinks are easy to drink quickly. That's behavioural, not metabolic, and probably the most underrated item here.

How to read the nutrition panel on a Canadian can
Here's the part most Canadians don't know, and it explains a lot of the confusion around canned cocktail nutrition. Under Canadian labelling rules, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency exempts "a beverage with an alcohol content of more than 0.5%" from carrying a Nutrition Facts table at all. That exemption is conditional — it's lost if the label makes a nutrient content claim or a health claim, or adds vitamins or minerals — which is why some cans have a panel and the one beside it doesn't.
Practical steps for your next store visit:
- If there's no Nutrition Facts table, that's normal, not suspicious — but you can't assume anything either. Check the brand's website for a stated sugar figure.
- If there is a panel, use the 5/15 rule. Health Canada's guidance is that "5% DV or less is a little" and "15% DV or more is a lot" for any nutrient. The Daily Value used for total sugars on Canadian labels is 100 g, so 5 g of sugar in a can shows as 5% DV.
- Read the ingredient list even when there's no panel. The CFIA requires sugars-based ingredients to be grouped after the term "Sugars" in parentheses, in descending order by weight — so Sugars (cane sugar, glucose-fructose) tells you a lot at a glance. The grouping covers fruit juice concentrate, honey, agave and corn syrup, not just table sugar.
- Look for sweeteners by name. Aspartame, sucralose, acesulfame-potassium and neotame must be declared. "Zero sugar" and "no sweeteners" are different claims.
- Check ABV and volume together. A larger can at a higher ABV is more alcohol, whatever the sugar line says.
What this evidence does not show
The limits matter more than the argument:
- The fructose/glucose hangover trial had 109 participants but scored 2/5 for quality, dates to 1976, found nothing, and hasn't been replicated at scale.
- The diet-mixer study had just 16 participants in a single lab, and found the sugary version produced the lower peak breath alcohol. Anyone citing it as proof that sugar-free drinks are gentler has read it backwards.
- The congener study used a 0.11 g% target dose in heavy drinkers. It doesn't generalise to two drinks on a patio, and it found no cognitive benefit to the lower-congener drink.
- Nothing here shows that any drink is healthier, safer, less intoxicating or medically beneficial. A no-sugar can and a sugary one at the same ABV and volume contain the same alcohol.
